Unique Student Identifier (USI) – How to Obtain One

As of January 1st 2015 anyone enrolling in a course with a Registered Training Organisation will be required to provide their  Unique Student Identifier (USI). This number will stay with you for life and record any nationally recognized Vocational Education and Training course that is undertaken from January 2015.

The USI will allow you to have easier and more reliable online access to your record of training history. You will also be able to produce a comprehensive transcript of your training. This can be used when applying for a job, seeking a credit transfer or demonstrating pre-requisites when undertaking further training.

Steps in gaining your USI

It should only take you about 5 minutes to complete.

Step 1: Go to www.usi.gov.au

Step 2: Select Create your USI from the front page

Step 3: Have any of the following available:

  • Driver’s Licence
  • Medicare Card
  • Australian Passport
  • Visa (with Non-Australian Passport) for international students
  • Birth Certificate (Australian) *please note a Birth Certificate extract is not sufficient
  • Certificate Of Registration By Descent
  • Citizenship Certificate
  • ImmiCard

Step 4: Provide the requested information.

Step 5: Save your USI as you will need this in the future.
